Relationships: Authentic Indigenous Relationships, Modeled by the Land
At Knott Consulting, we believe that authentic relationships are the foundation of all successful Indigenous partnerships. But where do we find the model for a relationship that is truly reciprocal, resilient, and rooted in respect? We find it in the land itself.
The deepest and most fundamental part of Indigenous core beliefs and practices are all about the land. It is the original source of relationship, teaching us how to live in balance and harmony. This Connection to the land is what most significant is how most Indigenous cultures view the land as sacred and integral to their identity. This connection influences every aspect of their lives, providing the ethical and spiritual framework for all human interaction.
The land does not simply provide resources; it provides a model for reciprocity. If we give, we receive; if we nurture, we flourish together.
A prime example of this deep-seated, authentic Indigenous relationship is found in Indigenous agricultural practices such as the THREE SISTERS method used by tribes and nations across Turtle Island. This ancient practice, which involves planting corn, beans, and squash together to maximize growth and sustainability, is a prime example of authentic Indigenous relationships that matter and embodies everything Knott Consulting strives to achieve with our clients.
In the Three Sisters method:
- The Corn provides a strong stalk for the bean to climb, offering structure and direction.
- The Beans fix nitrogen into the soil, feeding the corn and the squash, offering essential nourishment and reciprocity.
- The Squash spreads its broad leaves across the ground, shading the soil to retain moisture and suppress weeds, offering protection and stability.
None of the sisters stand alone. They thrive because they support each other’s strengths and needs, creating a complex, resilient, and enduring system. This is the definition of a truly authentic relationship: a mutually beneficial partnership where the needs of the collective strengthen the growth of the individual.
This philosophy has been part of the Indigenous resurgence and philosophy for generations. It moves beyond transactional interactions and corporate metrics to demand shared vision, mutual responsibility, and sustained commitment.
Knott Consulting works with our partners to apply the wisdom of the Three Sisters—Structure, Reciprocity, and Protection—to every engagement. We help organizations and Indigenous Peoples’ move past the fear that kept the Badger in the dark, building relationships that are grounded in sacred land-based principles, ensuring that when we stand together, we stand strong, resilient, and unafraid.
